The Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Energy says it is considering supporting a gradual phasing out of the use of Kerosene for cooking purposes and replacing it with domestic gas that is affordable to refill.

Chairman of the Committee, Lanre Ogunyemi, expressed this during a recent visit of a delegation from Oando Plc to introduce the use of gas for domestic cooking.

According to Ogunyemi, “I do not think this will be a difficult task in Lagos. We can inform our constituents about it through our Town Hall Meetings.”

He also explained that Lagos has always blazed the trail concerning good governance and enhancing the living standards of Lagosians.

Mr. Yomi Olubokun, the Chief Executive Officer of the Company, who led the delegation, explained that smoke from kerosene stove is one of the causes of death of Nigerians.

He further solicited for enabling laws to back up this initiative by banning the use of firewood and kerosene in schools and hospitals and sustaining the campaign against the use of the product by the lawmakers’ constituents.

While Segun Olulade and Bisi Yusuf were of the opinion that more public enlightenment was needed to allay the phobia of people over the use of gas, Suuru Avoseh and Ibrahim Layode expressed delight over the multipurpose use of the 3kg cylinder for Lamp, barbecue and other cooking services.

The lawmakers however expressed fear over the initial amount of N6,800 for the cylinder stove and gas content due to the poverty level of some constituents.

Mr. Olubokun was enjoined to work on the initial cost to attract mass patronage.
