Court grants robbery accused bail

A High court judge in Enugu city, east of Nigeria, Justice Chiene Nwobodo, has granted bail to one Chukwuka Owoh allegedly involved in armed robbery.

Nwobodo, who granted the bail in the sum of N300,000, said the accused must produce one surety in like sum, produce evidence of tax payment for the past three years and swear to an affidavit of means.

Mr C.J. Chime, counsel for the state, told the court he had filed an amended charge as pleaded on June 20 when the case came up.

The amended charge was read to the accused person and he pleaded not guilty.

Mr Okey Anike, counsel for the accused, applied for bail and his application was not opposed by the prosecutor.

The accused was alleged to have on May 14, 2009, in the company of others and armed with dangerous weapons, robbed one Ogbonna Isreal of items valued at N55,000.

The accused was also alleged to belong to a secret society known as Junior Vikings Confraternity.

The court also adjourned another case of armed robbery preferred against Chinedu Ozochi till July 24 to enable the state counsel to call his witnesses.

Nwobodo said it was better to have the prosecution tender its witnesses in proof of the allegation and that bail could be considered in due course.

Mr I.A. Ifeanyi, counsel for the state, told the court that the matter should be heard because the police prosecutor was not ready to proceed with it.

Mr Okey Omeh, counsel for the accused person, reminded the court of the application for bail he had filed.

The accused, a driver, and others now at large were alleged to have on Dec. 18, 2009 at Nwafor Ezza village, Abakaliki Road, Enugu conspired among themselves to commit felony.

They were alleged to have robbed one Susana Onwe of her cloths valued at N45,000 and N10,000 cash.
