Newspaper vendors in some parts of Lagos have cried out over the continuous harassment by some officials of the Lagos State government.

The vendors, who operate around the Apongbon and Victoria Island areas of the state, told P.M.NEWS this morning that they have persistently been harassed and their newspapers seized at every opportunity.

P.M.NEWS learnt that the officials raided newsstands of the vendors again today and confiscated newspapers which they had displayed for sale.

One of the vendors who gave his name as Adewale, explained to P.M.NEWS that today’s raid  was the worst since the officials had been coming.

He explained further that the officials who stormed the area with uniformed policemen refused to disclose their identifies or reasons behind the raid.

Another vendor at the Tinubu area of Lagos Island told P.M.NEWS that the task force which raided the area told them that the state does not want them to sell along the roads anymore.

He however queried government’s lack of sensitivity to their plight, saying they did not provide any other place for them.

A vendor at the Jakande, Ajah area of the state, Ayoteh Moshood, told P.M.NEWS that after confiscating his newspapers, his younger brother was arrested and taken away in a Black Maria.

He said the raid began three weeks ago when they were told that the LCC which had taken over control of the road, does not want them to operate around the area.

“We were still discussing and negotiating when they struck this morning,” he said.

The vendors appealed to the state government to come to their rescue and inform them where they have erred instead of what they described as a draconian act.
