Why I Dumped Cameroon For Nigeria –Sunday

“I was born a Cameroonian, but changed my nationality to run for Nigeria in international athletics competitions, because  I want opportunities like the Olympic Trials we had in Calabar and to get the desired exposure as an athlete.”

The above statement came from Ishmael Sunday shortly after he retained the men’s 5,000m title at the Athletic Championships in Calabar.

Sunday, who was born in Cameroon, but now competes for Nigeria revealed that he ditched his country of birth to represent Nigeria because of slim opportunities in his native land.

Sunday, who speaks much of French and less of English, said he was leaving Cross River State a happy man.

“I thank God for assisting me to win the gold medal in my race, it’s not wasy to be a winner, especially in the 5,000m.

“Long distances races are not meant for people that are not strong. So all the 15 athletes including I, who took part in the race were strong hearted, we were resilient, but I was the best.”
