Before it was closed down for parliamentary sittings and plenary on Monday, the hallowed chamber of the Lagos State House of Assembly which has become an auditorium, was named after the first Executive Governor of the State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, whose administration constructed and commissioned the chamber in 1980.

The motion to rename the chamber was moved by Adefunmilayo Tejuoso representing Mushin Constituency 1 where Jakande comes from. He was seconded by Olusegun Olulade representing Epe Constituency 2.

This means that the next plenary which would hold tomorrow, will take place at the newly constructed ultra-modern chamber which will be commissioned same day.

The old chamber is now known as Lateef Jakande Auditorium.

Speaking on the subject, Speaker Adeyemi Ikuforiji said the decision to rename the chamber was jointly reached by members at the parliamentary session.

Moving the motion, Tejuosho noted the contributions of the elder statesman who she said initiated and executed various projects during his administration between October 1979 and December 1983.

She also noted that: “One of his landmark achievements was the construction of the present hallowed chamber of the Lagos State House of Assembly which remains a reference point both in architectural design and beauty”.

Tejuosho observed that the chamber would be the only remnant of the Assembly structure built by the Jakande administration after the construction of the new chamber and office complex.

Other co-movers of the motion, which was unanimously accepted included Abiodun Tobun (Epe 1), Gbolahan Yishawu (Eti-Osa 11), Ipoola Omisore (Ifako/Ijaye 11) and Mrs. Adebimpe Akinshola (Ikorodu 11).
