Masturbation Controversy: Pastors Blast Oyakhilome

Pastors in Nigeria have lambasted the founder, Christ Embassy, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome over his comment that masturbation is not a sin against God but a mere habit that God is not angry about.

Pastor Chris Oyakhilome

Since the controversial pastor made the comment recently, angry reactions have been pouring in from Christendom over what they called heresy, being preached by the pastor, which negates the words of God.

Oyakhilome was asked by one of his pastors how one could overcome masturbation and he replied that “the reason you are thinking of stopping it (masturbation) is because you think it has become a habit for you… masturbation is not more than a habit than any other habit.

“So once you make up your mind that you want to break a particular habit, you just do it, you make up your mind… in fact the best way to break a habit is to replace it with another habit.

“There is one thing I would like to bring to your mind that may be of help to you because the reason you are thinking of stopping this is because of what you think it is.”

He added that “no matter how wrong you think this is in your mind, get this straight, in itself, it is not a sin against God,” emphasising that as a result of this belief that it is a sin, Satan used it to oppress people of God “making them feel ineffective and inefficient in the things of God.”

Reacting to Oyakhilome’s comment, the Prelate, Methodist Church Nigeria, Dr. Ola Makinde said there was only one way of having sex permitted by God in the Bible, which is only through marriage.

“There is only one way of having sex in the Bible which is natural. Masturbation is unnatural and unethical. Whatever is unnatural and unethical is abomination. I leave him to his own opinion,” he said.

According to Pastor Tunde Bakare of the Latter Rain Assembly, every believer must be able to subject his body to control because it could lead to something else.

Popular Evangelist, Pastor Akin Fasawe said Masturbation is a sin as stipulated in the Bible, saying that death was even recommended in the Bible for those who practiced such things.

“Masturbation is a sin because when you masturbate, you will release. If the minister of God said masturbation is not a sin, he can easily tell his church that fornication is not a sin. The Bible recommends death in the Old Testament,” he stated.

According to Primate Elijah Ayodele of the INRI Evangelical Church, it is stated clearly in the Bible that masturbation is a sin against God.

“That is his own view. Where did he see it in the Bible that masturbation is not a sin? Maybe he has his own Bible. It is a bad thing. Maybe it is in his Bible,” he laughed.

Pastor Akin Akande of the Men of Purpose Ministry stated that masturbation is a sin.

“It is like abusing the gift of God. It is heresy. The Bible says it is a sin to derive pleasure outside the content of marriage,” he added.

Pastor Leke Akinola of the Upper Room Baptist, said self induced masturbation is a sin against God and that it is heresy for any minister of God to say it is not a sin.

According to Rev. Sam Ogedengbe, “masturbation is a sin and it is unbiblical. It is demonic and anyone engaging in it should know that it has spiritual connection.”

Many online readers of the Oyakhilome story published in the Friday edition of P.M.NEWS have criticised the controversial pastor for making such a comment.

One of the readers, Machie Sunie Chuks, asked: “how can you do it without your mind being there? Pastor please, call a spade a spade! Remember, your body is the temple of God, so keep it holy! Readers, please test which spirit is speaking through this famous pastor before you continue to bind yourselves with Satan’s yoke!”

Another reader who gave his name as Osa Jolly simply wrote: “masturbation is a sin…the Bible does not accommodate it in anyway.”

Nicholas Istifanus said his body is God’s temple and that he must keep it holy. Osinaku Benedict declared: “you will always be a slave to sin until you quit excusing your weaknesses claiming it is a habit or that you are helpless.

“As a child of God you are not helpless. A Christian hates sin while a sinner excuses and justifies it. Sir, please use your exalted office as a man of God to win lost souls back to Christ.”

Maigeri Joachim said: “Chris, stop plunging the world into confusion. The genital organ is made by God for a specific purpose. It is wrong to use it wrongly. The scripture says all wrong doing is sin. I ask you, is fornication a sin? Is it not a sin committed in agreement? Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. I hope you are not a masturbator?”

Orsidy Bellowcy exclaimed: “God! I think Satan is taking over some men of God! How could Pastor Chris say that masturbation is not a sin?”

He added that since the human body is God’s temple, he is of the opinion that man should not indulge in any unholy things like masturbation “or are we now living in Sodom and Gomorrah of this age? Pastor, you are absolutely wrong!

“Please, you need to retract the speech you have made, because you are too far away from the truth if truly you have said it!”

A reader, who simply called himself David urged Pastor Chris to go back to Bible school “because, once you conceive it in your mind, you’ve done it.”

Pastor Victor Adimorah said: “although every man of God is being led by the spirit of God to bless us, when there is a problem within the man of God, we are expected to hear comments like the one made by the Pastor. Please pray for Pastor Oyakhilome. I believe he is undergoing a spiritual battle.”

Prince Coker declared: “If truly this man said this, I come clean, he is a Satanist. Get the book The Sin of Pride you will get to know what masturbation means.”

Elias while warning people not to challenge men of God said: “maybe God told him to deliver the message. I expect other men of God who have a contrary opinion to educate us because many men may opt for masturbation instead of sex, since there is danger in having sex now.”

Another reader, Kay asked: “does fantasy not proceed from the mind? If the body is the temple of the Holy Ghost, is it not wrong to defile it? I like the man Pastor Chris but on this one, I disagree with him. This is not scriptural and it is morally wrong!”

Fola Dare says: “what is wrong is wrong! Masturbating is a bad habit. Our body is the temple of God.”

Bruce L. asked: “will Pastor Chris also tell us that pornography is also a habit and not a sin? Converted Christian who were in the occult world will tell you that it is a spiritual attack that Satan uses to destroy Christians as the semen goes to a semen bank.”

In her response, Susan Jones said: “masturbation, just like any other sexual immoralities, is wrong. It is just like a pastor, telling his followers that they could have intercourse with someone that they are not married to if they use condom. Semen is first and foremost for procreation, it is not to be wasted as it would normally happen when masturbating.”

Another reader, Wale, wondered: “Because masturbation is not in the Bible it’s not a sin? The Bible doesn’t talk about ganja (marijuana), cocaine and secret cult so they are not sin also?”

According to Zik Dave, “It is very bad that Pastor Chris is taking the gospel to another dimension. Before someone starts masturbation, he must feel like fornicating, which is a confirmed sin. Please my humble members in the vineyard, masturbation is a sin.”

My dear u must be a member of the church. You are deluded to think that if u feel justified to do something then its not a sin. Wake up. If a man drinks vodka to stop the cold, it is not a sin but when he takes it too much then its a sin. That is why a christ embassy pastor asked me to sleep with him, that it is not a sin cause God has already forgiven us by Grace. My mum is a deaconess in christ embassy and they are scared of her cause she’s always telling the pastors when they are going off Key upfront.

Masturbation, is a bad habit and a sin. but, it is not a sin against God. Ask me what is a sin against God? The magnituted of the sin masturbation, compared to a sin against God is quite minimal. Pastor, though im not a fan of him, is right.

@ Micheal, thank u jare my broda, though i dont believe in any of those so called men of God .masturbation saves d society from the issue of rape, fornication, adultery, unwanted pregnancies and moreover,it is economically cheap.lol
u cant contact any sexually transmitted disease from masturbation..

Its amazing that people make comments without confirming. Pastor Chris did not expressly say so. These so called journalist have very annoying ways of twisting statements to get peoples attention.

Be careful what you say about a man of God!

To pastor Chris and my other brethren over; I would like to know what constitutes sin in line with this masturbation. Yes, our bodies are the tample of God and should not be defied, may I know how masturbation defy the body since there is not biblical book, chapter and verse to support the fact that it is a sin.

Many people here condemn this man are worse than he is.Most of the people commenting here even though are married still committ adultery, many still in fornication. Some of them even sleep with people’s wives.Even as pastor’s.We should stop condemning people.See believe it or not, once a man is matured enough for his testosterone to begin to produce spermatozoa,it gets to an extent when your sack gets full enough to release it.Just like pouring water into a cup, when the cup gets full there’s no other place to pour it.Now you will need to get such spermatozoa out of you.Yes definately this is science, but we should know that we exist in this world based on same foundation of science,i’ve see men of God tell their church members no to watch TV becos it is bad. Some say dont put on ear rings. Some even select the kind of food their memebrs should eat.

All these make those men of God,take the position of God himself. The truth of the matter is that, only God know’s our hidden and inner most secrets. Most men of God preach what they dont practice, just to answer God men of God and deceive people to flock their churches. We should all search our hearts before we condemn anyone.Masturbation to me is better that fornication, adultery, just like a writter here said,it reduces the sin to the commiter rather than passing sinful act to people’s wife of young sisters,or people husbands and young men.We all know the truth, many men of God have chains of girlfriends, some married women. So plz lets leave God to judge.

@Michael what is the different between that and emptying the sperm in a woman going by your premise. Like I said earlier on, it’s all down to interepretation. There’s no authority on this issues if you ask me.
But for me I’ll say masturbation is wrong QED.

my heart bleeds to say the least. this is a statement capable of leading many astray. i pray fo the mercy of God upon all.

i as a person can never believe any opinion of any one who claimed to be a man of God cus God himself has never told me they were his so i believe everyone has a right to his or her own opinion based on experience.i see no reason to believe that my body is the temple of God when someone who is also human like me can go and plant bombs(boko haram) to kill multitudes of people directly inside the house of God(church)..if the boko harams body has been taking over by the devil what about the body of dose killed in the church,is d temple of God absent in the body of those killed in that blast while they were serving God..my people ,let us stopped being deceived with religious beliefs and lets face the realities of life by doing the right thing at the right time to make our society become habitable,i hate religion with passion cus so far it has brought the highest number of bloodshed around the world over time.
i would rather continue to appreciate Science for the rest of my life rather than following one useless scriptures written some people that we cant even trace thier background to know their profile when they were writting it and telling us that they wrote their so called books with Gods inspiration.
more reliance oh science as made advanced countries grow bigger, here we are in nigeria being decieved by religious beliefs and we have nothing to show for it upon all the night vigils and fire for fire prayer.lol
In a nutshell beleive me or not, religion is the oldest way of scamming because all this men of God as they claimed to be as always said God does not need my money but just my praise and worship but at the end of the day God wants me to part with my money as tithe or offering which pastors and imams would feed fat on.all of dem are mad!!!!!!

  9. Samuel SUnday

The Bible passage that is closer to the issue of masturbation is Gen 38-9. Where the Lord killed Onar the son of Judah as a result of spilling out the semen I might be wrong but this is the closest passage to the subject matter i can find.

  10. Kelechi

Those who criticise Pst Chris are ignorant. “Blessed is the man to whom God will not impute sin”. -Romans 4.

  11. saiki christabel

I saw dis video You tube!D pastor in question did not encourage it! I’m sure 99% of ppl commenting negatively didn’t even bother to listen ₪ hear 4 demselves b4 critizing! Most of dis youth spreading dis stuff stil fornicate and involve themselves in sin! We are not to give judgement! I think passing judgement is a sin of its own!God help us all

See brethren sometimes the congregation need to pray seriously for their Pastors, pls i urge all Christians to pray for him.

  13. Annyto

For those of us who believe that’ christ embassey is a church of God, is a lesson to u all. How can a man of God in heaven open his mouth and said dat masturbation is not a sin! He practice it dat why he said is not a sin’ what a “piffle”..this pastor chris oyakhilome is a man of ‘Satan’ not man of God..his sins wil find him out one day! I strongly believe dat.

  14. Joncn

I wil lik to ask a simple question here. WHAT DO PPLE THINK IN MIND B4 MASTURBATING? I beliv it is not to shw appreciatn to God 4 blesng dem wt dat part. D inner reason 4 most habits constitutes wether a habit is a sin or not and masturbatn is out of lust hence a SIN. Let me tel u that havng sex wit ur legal wife culd b seen as sin in d eyes of God as far as it is operated outside d operatn manul of God. D only icon of perfectn and hope 4 humanity is Jesus Christ, God personified and not general overseers nor pastors.

  15. Jinadu

If masturbation is an habit and not a sin, then drug addiction is not a sin but an habit.

This pronouncement by Pastor Chris is a clear indication of the Satanic spirit in the so-called Pastor Chris.

    God have mercy.

  16. Ife Taiwo

Children of God, masturbation is a sin. Pastor Chris should know that his comment would go a very long way to mislead ‘babes in Christ’ and most especially members of his church. Masturbation is as grievous as fornication, adultery and homosexual. God have mercy on the church.

  17. leomanhero

may god help that fake pastor to become a good pastor see one thin i know in this world is that bad is bad and good is what good

  18. Henry

It is just like a lady asked a man what does fornication and adultery mean.the man told her wen u had sexual intercourse wit sm1 u are nt married to and wi a married man.d gal asked even if u kissed the guy or man, romanced or even finger her bt the guy penis did nt penetrate her virgina.the man said yes.mastubation is a sin dat has eaten deep into the life xtians even more than fornication and adultery.

  19. lekan

we nigerian like to act God,we condem and judge when we act holier than thou.forgeting God said thou shall not judge, abi who will assist God on the day of judgement.

  20. Emmanuel Adebayo (corporate)

If there is anybody that cannot hold himself, should go and get married, says the Holy scripture. Masturbation is a sin so that such things like masturbation, adultry will never exist in christian’s life. For this simple reason, masturbation is a sin.

I’ve read through a no of comments and one phrase that strikes me is the mention of “GODS ORIGINAL PLAN FOR SEX”
does this original plan include anal and oral sex in marriage, cos if a married man cannot ask for a hand/blowjob from his wife wen too tired to have sex, then wahala dey.
if this be the case, let every man’s heart guide him according to the understanding of his holy book, religion and personal relationship with God. and don’t wait for any pastor to confuse u, without having accurate biblical backing.

  22. Edet

I think there is something wrong somewhere in the sense that this man has the form of Godliness but he is denying the power thereof,in as much as the bible admonish us to flee al forms of sexual immoralities,we shd stand by the word.the bible is complete,in the last days……
Judgement wil start from the house of God

  23. evaugeu

If u need a personal counseling on this issue pls mail me hisgrace4mi67@yahoo.com, i will tell u more but may i just say this; pastor Chris made a big mistake that he even need to come out on all the TV station in Nigeria and get it right. no wonder many of his pastors are now going to hair dressing saloon instead of Barbing saloon. all this habit are satanic and devil strategy to destroy the children of God. i love pastor Chris but i hate many of his teaching that are contrary to the word of God and most often pple of ignorance call it divine knowledge.

I was shocked when one of his church member told me he told his ppl nt to sing ‘I WANT MORE OF U’ by his own member Sinach. 4 God sake what is wrong with some one singing and asking to know more of God? even the bible tell us to seek his face. how then can u say u already hav God u dnt need more of Him. this man of God think he knows every thing and brain wash his member.

I was in a prostitute hotel to preach one day and i invited one o the inmate to church surprisingly she told me that her Madam who brought her from the village for prostitution tell them not to attend any other church except Christ Embassy. I think its bcos of all this sinful teaching that they call it divine knowledge. God have mercy

My very good friend Chris,..anyway please refer to 1timothy 3. But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. 2 FOR PEOPLE WILL BE LOVERS OF SELF, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, WITHOUT SELF CONTROL, brutal, not loving good,….

PLEASE NO MATER WHO YOU ARE THERE NEED TO CONTINUALY FIGHT FOR YOUR SALVATION ON DAILY BASIS AND WITHOUT COMPROMISE.

  25. O D

If Jesus says that anyone that look @ a woman lustfuly have committed adultery. Then Masturbation is a product of lustful imagination.
No man is greater than God word, if Pastor Chris says that Masturbation is not Sin, that does not change the plan of God on sinful act.
He may be an authority here on earth, leading a group of influencial people that does not change the God’s mind.
@ the final analysis, anything done against ones body is against God’s temple.
Mastubation is against your body and this is punishable by God becose his house is defiled

  26. Pastor Akanbi M.O

What I think Pastor Oyakhilome would have used in educating the children of God is what the Holy scripture says that “Anyone that can not hold himself, should go and get married. What the bible is saying is that, if you can remain the same way, Apostle Paul was without getting married to any woman, you can continue to remain like that, but if you cann’t, you are authorised by God to go into marriage, so that such things like masturbation, fornication, adultry will never exist in one’s life. In a nutshell, masturbation is a sin against God.

All these quotes and not one Solid backing!
It’s quite funny that in this age, people are still too blinded, walking about like a donkey running after a carrot attached to its neck; the funny thing is that the mean of God who’re challenging this facts themselves are not backing it up scripturally.
Reading throgh the post, i wondered are we so dump?
Scientifically, medical practitioners have urged people to masturbate. Google “scientist’s recommendation for masturbation”. I masturbate but i know It’s isn’t an honorable thing and i believe i’d break free soon, but that doesn’t mean that Pastor Chris is wrong. A Chaplain once came to deliver a sermon where he said it was a sin and referred to Jeremiah, but i tell you the truth, i’ve searched throughout Jeremiah, there’s no reference to Masturbation there.
If people want to condemn, have a solid proof on something.
My philosophy is that anything i cannot do when someone else is around me is dishonorable, but does that mean it’s a sin? No. People should stop turning the Bible upside down and misleading the People of God. The only reference preachers should give to such things is DISHONORABLE, but not to God but yourself.
It’s difficult to believe what Pastor Chris has said because we have grown up to believe that such things are wrong, based on the opinions of the older generations, but it doesn’t signify that it’s a sin, rather an opinion.
When i was growing up, the Church elders and my parents brought me up with the opinion that having sex was a sin, but then i got into SS1 and a friend asked me how to make babies, i said i’d sleep side-by-side with my wife and baby would come! He laughed at me and i said it’s a sin to have sex, but science proved my parents and elders wrong, because they felt that sex education was to be orevented. I never knew or saw a condom until i got out of secondary school, whereas if i had, i’d have learnt and know much about sex. So, it all boils down opinionated knowledge and working knowledge, not sin and righteousness. I’d advise people to break free from Masturbation, based on real knowledge, not ignorance. Pastor Chris enlightened people to break free, not by ignorance but by Biblical Knowledge. And that is why Nigeria is still the way it is, because some Leaders believe that the only way to prevent chaos, riot and turmoil is by rationalizing/witholding information(Ignorance), imagine the number of People who have lost their lives in the North, because they were not enlightened about the Benefits of Western education. Saudi Arabia and all other Middle Eastern and Islamic countries are benefitting from Western Education, but the Northern Leaders made their followers believe that Western Education is evil! Now people are losing their lives because of some Leaders witholding relevant information from their followers. Research your opinion and back it by the Scriptures like Pastor Chris has done, not ignorance and misleading People.

I AM STILL WAITING FOR THE BIBLE QUOTATIONS, ESPECIALLY FROM THE MEN OF GOD HERE. LISTEN, MASTURBATION IS NOT SEX AND WHETHER WE LIKE IT OR NOT, THE CONCEPT OF WHAT SIN IS EVOLVES AND IS DYNAMIC FROM PLACE TO PLACE. THERE ARE PARTS OF THE WORLD WHERE WOMEN WEARING TROUSERS IS A SIN, MAN MADE DOCTRINES ABOUND TILL THERE IS A THIN LINE BETWEEN SIN AND CULTURE. THAT IS WHY SOMEONE HERE HAS DECIDED THAT MARIJUANA IS A SIN. HOW!!! THE BIBLE STATES CLEARLY THAT SIN IS UNBELIEF. I THEREFORE BELIEVE THAT THE EXTENT TO WHICH U FEEL GUILTY OF ERROR IS THE EXTENT TO WHICH YOU THINK THAT PARTICULAR THING IS A SIN. I BET YOU, THE MAN IN RUSSIA WHO DRINKS VODKA FOR THE COLD, YOU THINK HE THINKS IT IS A SIN? BECAUSE HE NEEDS IT FOR THE COLD MAKES IT LESS A SIN THAN SOMEONE DRINKING SAME IN NIGERIA? LISTEN, THIS WRITE UP IS NOT COMPLETE. PASTOR CHRIS SAID N I QUOTE “IF HE FEELS JUDGED IN IS SPIRIT, HE SHOULD BY ALL MEANS BREAK THE HABIT BUT IF HE FEELS VINDICATED IN HIS SPIRIT, HE NEED NOT WORRY. THE GUILT IS WHAT THE DEVIL USES TO ENSLAVE GOD’S CHILDREN.”. SO I AM TELLING YOU NOW THAT FORGET WHAT ANYONE TELLS U, IF U DONT FEEL GUILTY OF IT, U R GOOD. THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO DO NOT PAY TITHE BUT THEY FEEL OK CUZ THEY BELIEVE IT IS RIGHT. IF I DO NOT PAY MY TITHE, I FEEL HORRIBLY EVIL….SO WHAT U KNOW TO A LARGE EXTEND WILL GUIDE WHAT U INTERPRET AS SIN. I REST MY CASE. THAT SAID, PASTOR CHRIS…………I CAN ONLY DESCRIBE HIM AS A GIFT TO THIS GENERATION. GOD WAS THINKING OF YOU N I WHEN HE SENT US CHRIS OYAKHILOME N THE SOONER THE WORLD RECOGNISES HIM FOR WHAT HE IS, A MAN SENT FROM FROM GOD TO A WORLD HE LOVES, REMINISCENT OF HIS SENDING HIS SON, THE BETTER WE’D BE FOR IT. I LOVE U ALL.

Please, all you readers should log in tomorrow to read the verses of the bible that condemn mastubation. You all will see that it is a serios sin!

    2. christiana

Finally, i can read a post from a knowledgable person. I wonder why christians expect the media (ruled by the devil) to portray men of God in positive light. The media would never carry the whole truth and advise christians to be careful how they carelessly open their mouth to judge God’s men. I am not a member of Pastor Chris’ church but I believe greatly in his ministry. What he said is the cure to the sin. All those who keep quoting scriptures have not offered the cure only condemnation.

The end time is here! God will save his people, Masturbating, Masturbatory,do we need anybody to tell us that the HABIT as he called it “A MORAL ACT” we don’t anybody to tell us that is not good and sinful, but PASTOR CHRIS AS CONFIRMED as an HABIT, “no matter how wrong you think this is in your mind, get this straight, in itself, it is not a sin against God,”CAN SOMEONE TELLS ME WHAT THE MAN (CHRIS) MEANT BY “NO MATTER HOW WRONG YOU THINK THIS IS IN YOUR MIND” IF IT IS NOT A SIN, WHY THE WRONG THINKING??? HE WILL DEFINITELY DEFEND HIMSELF ON JUDGEMENT DAY, but my people IF YOU STARTED DOING IT NOW OR YOU WANTED TO STOP AND YOU DECIDED TO CONTINUE BASED ON CHRIS’s PREACHING YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN HIS PREACHING IS NOT EXPECTED TO AFFECT YOU INITIATIVES. BE CAREFUL OF CHURCHES YOU ARE ATTENDING, THERE MANY CHURCHES AND PASTORS THAT ARE TRUE SERVANTS OF GOD BUT BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT FAMOUS, RICH AND POPULAR, PEOPLE WILL NOT LIKE TO WORSHIP WITH THEM.

  31. XTY

my dear flozy, the only way you can come out of it is to open up to God, He is your creator, when He sees the sincerity of your heart He will help you, with God all things are possible. (PRAYER IS THE KEY TO OVERCOME ANY PROBLEM)

  32. Nduka Iwelumo

Pastor Chris talked about this issue as far back as 2006 and even at that he is been quoted out of context here. He has a message titled ‘The Concept of Sin’. i advise you get is and see whether or not it aligns with the Word of God. I could not help but note that not one of the several Pastors mentioned above quoted any specific scripture and the one who referred to the old testament surely should know better. What makes something right is not because it sounds right ditto for what makes something wrong.

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT…

    MASTURBATION?

“What does the Bible say about masturbation?” is one of our most frequently asked questions. Many Christians have found it difficult to answer this question according to the Bible, because the Bible never mentions masturbation specifically. To understand how God feels about this subject, we must examine other verses that deal with issues such as lust, self-control and purity. Also, we must examine its fruit to see if it is from God. We have tried to address this issue by answering some of the most frequently asked questions. Our prayer is that God will use this page to bring freedom and deliverance.

“Does God care about what we do in the privacy of our bedrooms?”

Sex is God’s invention. He is the mastermind behind it—and His creation is worth far more to Him than it is to us. This beautiful expression of love was created out of His own heart, as a gift to be experienced between a husband and wife. It is only in marriage that this manifestation of intimacy can be fully enjoyed in the depth for which it was created.

“Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and the sexually immoral” (Hebrews 13:4, NIV).

“Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge” (Hebrews 13:4, KJV).

The more beautiful and unique something is (like sexual intercourse), the more power it holds over our lives, either for good or bad influence. That is why it is so easy for the devil to corrupt the most precious of God//’//s gifts. When we become more in love with the gifts than the One who endowed them, the things that were designed to bless us begin to destroy us instead. Yes, God cares about what we do with our bodies, in public or in private. He doesn//’//t want us to abuse ourselves in any way.

In fact, an older definition of masturbation is “self-abuse.” Although more modern dictionaries may no longer carry this definition, they are still linked together under self-abuse:

    Self-abuse noun¹

    1. Abuse of oneself or one//’//s abilities.
    2. Masturbation.

1 Corinthians 6:18 (NIV) further confirms this, saying that unlawful sexual relations defile our own bodies. “Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body.”

“Isn’t it still better to masturbate than to commit fornication?”

The easy answer to this question would be, “Yes, it is better to masturbate, because at best it corrupts only one person. It certainly is the lesser of two evils.” However, why would a loving, holy, all-powerful God abandon you to a situation in which you have to choose any evil, whether it be “lesser” or “greater?” To really answer this question, we must again go back to God’s original plan for sex.

First of all, masturbation will not truly relieve the sexual pressure that one may feel. It may for a short moment, but in the long run it only creates a deeper desire and capacity for sex, which will lead to more masturbation. If you let yourself become enslaved to a sexual high, you will find that you need to go to increasingly extreme acts to maintain the same degree of excitement. There are even ungodly sex therapists who recommend masturbation as a way of increasing sexual desire, not lessening it. This creates a vicious circle, like the junkie who craves a “fix,” but is only temporarily satisfied. The more he indulges in his dependency, the more ensnared by addiction he becomes. This is the nature of all sin. That is why Jesus declared that all who sin become a slave to sin (John 8:34).

Furthermore, masturbation usually involves fantasy, visualization, and often pornography. The Bible is very clear as to what God expects of us in these areas of fantasy and lust. It teaches that we must not look lustfully at each other nor should we behave in such a manner as to entice others to lust after us.

“I made a covenant with my eyes not to look with lust upon a girl. I know full well that the Almighty God sends calamity on those who do” (Job 31:1-3, The Living Bible).

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Matthew 5:28).

While the above verses refer to men lusting after women, all women know that it can very easily be reversed to apply to themselves as well. Men may be more easily visually stimulated than women, but women can be just as vulnerable to sexual fantasy in the emotional realm. Both are sin in God’s eyes, and both can be brought into subjection by controlling our thoughts through Christ’s power.

All sexual immorality begins with a thought. A lustful thought not taken captive, will eventually lead to other perversions, because sin reproduces itself in increasingly greater measures. If we do not deal with our evil thoughts, they will take root in our hearts.

It is for this reason that God is so concerned with our thought life. Jesus came not only to deliver us from our “outward” sins, but also from wickedness that begins in the heart.

Since masturbation begins with sin in the mind, it might be called an “affair of the mind” because it brings about sexual sin inflicted against one’s own body. Although it brings a short lived gratification, it makes one feel defiled when continued on a regular basis. In fact, it is a form of fornication because fornication is more that just sex with someone before marriage, it includes many other sexual sins such as pornography and the use of sexual toys for gratification. People who are not satisfied with God’s plan for sex commit idolatry by using evil things to experience weird and unlawful forms of sexual intercourse. Some verses in Ezekiel actually describe this kind of fornication.

    Ezekiel 16:15-17:
15But you trusted in and relied on your own beauty and were unfaithful to God and played the harlot [in idolatry] because of your renown, and you poured out your fornications upon anyone who passed by [as you worshiped the idols of every nation which prevailed over you] and your beauty was his.

16And you took some of your garments and made for yourself gaily decorated high places or shrines and played the harlot on them–things which should not come and that which should not take place.

17You did also take your fair jewels and beautiful vessels of My gold and My silver which I had given you and made for yourself images of men, and you played the harlot with them.

I agree WIth Pastor Chris in the context of Marriage. if your wife is away and you masturbate because you visualize having sex with ur wife you cant consider that to be sin

It is rather unfortunate that not a single scripture from the bible talking about masturbation was quoted in the write-up. All I could see are condemnation without reference to any relevant section of the bible. I can only see assumptions on rampage by people who ought to be grouded in the word of God.

When you masturbate, you will be having pleasure as if you are having sex with opposite sex and the bible says, “not only those that do it but also those that have pleasure in it shall be judged”. So, masturbation is a sin but that those not mean we should be condemning the man of God. The scripture is not easy to be interpreted especially if you are in the flesh. May be the man of God was in the flesh on that day. No one is perfect. May God help us.

      1. Sammie

@ Flozzy, pray about it first. Then you need to find an accountability partner, someone u ca trust who will support u prayerfully and who u can call when u feel tempted. Take it one day at a time. God will give you strength, amen.

Funny enough, people like spoon feeding, do you need a pastor to tell you that masturbation is bad or corruption (stealing) … Christians need to read their bible and interpret it themselves.
Pastors are also human and they interpret the bible as they deem fit …

Sin is sin and masturbation is a sin against God and against the body which is the temple of God. All we need to do is pray for this so-called man of God because the devil is seriously at war and will deceive even the very elect.

While I disagree with Pastor Chris’ assertion about Masturbation not being sin, I would like to say that he has made a very important point and that is the point on “how we define sin.”
In all the “reactions” I have read, everybody seems to be saying the Bible explicitly condemns masturbation but nobody has provided the relevant scriptural verses.
I fear that we are reacting this way because masturbation is “abhorred” by a large section of the society and considered perverse.
My fear is, what about those “sinful habits” we are comfortable with?
Will we be this total in condemning them?
We must examine what constitutes sin, and not become arbitrary in our labelling certain things sin without the proper Scriptural foundation.
Like I said, I believe masturbation is sin and it is sin because the Bible commands us in 1Corinthians 10:31, “…whatever you do, do all to the glory of God”. And no one is yet to show me how they can “masturbate to the glory of God.”

    1. emas

how do u eat to the glory of God, how dou drink to the glory of God, brushing your teeth day and night is a habit how do you do that to the glory of God
