Our Target For Flamingoes Is World Cup —Green

Still in the excitement of winning the first competitive game in 2012 when the Flamingoes beat Kenyan girls 2-0 in Nairobi last weekend, the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, says performing very well at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Azerbaijan later this year is the main target of the federation.

Chris Green, a board member of the NFF told P.M.Sports in Abuja that the NFF will not be carried away by the victory but will leave nothing to chance to ensure that the Flamingoes win the second leg of the qualifying series in Nigeria in two weeks time.

It was gathered that winning the second leg would guarantee Nigeria’s qualification for the World Cup.

“We are happy with the victory of Flamingoes against Kenya in Nairobi. It is the first victory of Nigeria this year and we hope for better things to come. However, the NFF will make sure the girls prepare very well for the return leg in Abuja. Our main target is the World Cup, not just to qualify but to perform well at the world tournament with the possibility of winning the trophy,” Green said.

On the accusation made by Kenya that Nigeria featured overaged players in last weekend’s match, Green said that the NFF was very thorough during the screening exercise for the Flamingoes, adding that only players within the age bracket actually made the team.

Green said the accusation of Kenya was just an excuse after they lost the match at their backyard last Saturday.

“We knew the extent we went to get the girls and they are within the age limit for the competition to form the current Flamingoes squad. Kenyan officials were just displaying their ignorance of the game. Some of the girls featured for Nigeria at the last edition, their records are with FIFA and they can never be overaged” he said.
