As the nationwide fuel subsidy strike entered the fifth day today, the Rivers State branch of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Niger Delta Universal Periodic Review Coalition have called on Nigerians particularly those in the Niger Delta to join the strike.

The Rivers NLC boss,Chris Oruge, has described as false the rumour making the rounds that the strike had been called off in the state.

Oruge said: “It is only the NLC that can call off the nationwide and no other person or body has the powers to call off the strike.”

The coalition stressed that it is the only opportunity for Nigerians to take back their economy, which has been hijacked by the World Bank and IMF.

“The Bolivians rejected the demonic IMF/World Bank inspired economic policies and Nigerians should do the same, said UPR Coalition in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Legborsi Saro Pyagbara.

It regretted that the Jonathan-led government that received an unprecedented mandate from the people could turn around to inflict the worst forms of sufferings on the same masses that voted him into power with such thoughtless impunity.

According to Pyagbara, “there is nowhere in the world where subsidy removal has been over one hundred percent in one fell swoop. Why would an oil exporting country like Nigeria without electricity remove subsidy by One hundred and ten percent (110%) whilst a non-oil exporting country like Ghana with electricity removed subsidy by just twenty percent (20%)?”

The coalition maintained its support for the ongoing strike while urging President Goodluck Jonathan to avert the imposition of avoidable sufferings on the Nigerian masses occasioned by the unreasonable fuel subsidy removal by reverting to the old pump price of N65 before any engagement with Nigerians in discussions on the controversial fuel subsidy removal could take place.

The group further called on Nigerians to remain steadfast and committed to the national call for protests against neo-liberal agents and not to be deterred by governments’ worn-out lies and outright falsehood as they intensify their negative propaganda and dubious antics against the people.
