Nigeriaâ€s President Goodluck Jonathan has constituted two committees to handle some issues arising from the removal of the N1.2 trillion subsidy on petrol consumption.
Dr. Christopher Kolade a former Nigerian ambassador and former chairman of Cadbury Nigeria Limited was named the chairman of a committee called Subsidy Reinvestment, Empowerment Committee. His committee will manage the envisaged savings from governmentâ€s
decision on New Yearâ€s day to end subsidy said to accrue from the importation of petrol into Nigeria.
The decision has stirred discontent in the country, with labour leaders and civil society groups threatening to call workers on strike. Even a vocal group within the National Assembly has spoken out against the decision of government.
Jonathan has announced a second committee, headed by a retired Chief Justice of Nigeria, Alfa Belgore, to negotiate on behalf of government on the dispute.
