Events That Shaped Nollywood In 2011

•Veteran actor, Ishola Durojaiye, a.k.a. Alasari died in March. Ashley Nwosu also died few months later. Donald Okoli died on Friday, 23 September. Yemisi Eleto and Sam Loco completed the list of popular thespians that died in the out-going year.

•Popular actress, Temitayo Odueke almost lost her life to a strange illness, while Prince Ifeanyi Dike arrived Nigeria aboard Emirate Airline on 15 September from New Delhi, India after a kidney transplant. Actor Kayode Odumosu otherwise known as Pa Kasumu also battled a liver-related ailment. Veteran Enebeli Elebuwa is still recuperating from stroke.

•Actress Mercy Johnson got married in what was considered the most controversial wedding of the year. Dejo Richards, the husband of actress Monalisa Chinda, re-married after divorcing the actress. Pint-sized actor, Chinedu ‘Aki’ Ikedieze got married to his heartthrob as well. Sukanmi Omobolanle also walked down the aisle.

•Actress Uche Jombo and Chika Ike survived auto crashes that would have claimed their lives.

•Actor Fred Aseroma divorced his wife. Chika Ike’s marriage also hit the rocks. More prominent and shocking among the marriage break-ups in 2011 is that of actress Kate Henshaw to her British hubby, Nuttal. The marriage lasted 12 years before hitting the rocks. Actress Moji Olaiya was also not lucky with her marriage.

•Comic actor, Babatunde Omidina, popularly known as Baba Suwe, was in NDLEA custody for allegedly swallowing substances suspected to be cocaine. He was later released after what was dubbed ‘drama of the year.’ Actor Ayo Badmus was pummeled at a political rally.
