For allegedly pouring acid on his wife, a Lagos-based businessman, Ndubuisi Okoro, 35 has been arrested by the police and arraigned before the Apapa Magistrates’ Court, Lagos for attempting to kill his wife.

The jealous husband who had for long suspected his wife, Anthonia of having extra marital affairs, the police stated, pounced on her immediately she arrived their 28, Adeponle Street, Amukoko, Lagos and beat her to a pulp.

Not satisfied with the beating, the enraged husband went into the room and brought out a bottle containing acid and poured it on her.

It took the intervention of tenants in the house who dragged Ndubuisi away from the battered woman and saved her from further punishment. She was immediately rushed to a private hospital where she was admitted.

Ndubuisi was later handed over to policemen from the Apapa Station invited by the landlord of the house.

In the two-count charge of attempted murder and assault filed against him, the police prosecutor told the court that Anthonia would have been killed but for neighbours who came to her help. He urged the court to take account of the seriousness of the charges and reject bail for the accused.

Count two of the charge reads:” That you, Ndubisi Okoro on the same date, time and place did intend to kill Anthonia Okoro by using a liquid substance suspected to be acid on her and thereby committed an offence punishable under Sections 320 and 451 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 17, Vol. 2, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria.”

He pleaded not guilty to the charges and the presiding magistrate, Mrs. A. K. Shonubi granted him bail in the sum of N150,000 with two sureties.

He was unable to meet the conditions attached to the bail and was ordered to be remanded at the Kirikiri Maximum Security Prisons, Apapa.
