Veteran film star Pete Edochie leads the pack of African actors and actresses nominated for the 16th edition of the African Films Awards, a.k.a Afro Hollywood Awards holding in the United Kingdom on 6 November.

The awards ceremony, holding at the historic Stratford Town Hall, London, also has a rich list of nominees including one of South Africa’s leading actors, Presley Chweneyagae (famed for his lead role in Tsotsi), who will slug it out with Nigeria’s Saheed Balogun and Ghana’s Majid Michael.

According to the shortlist of nominees released by the African Voice Newspaper UK, organisers of the awards, the keenly contested list of award nominees features heavyweights such as Tonto Dike, Halima Abubakar, Toyin Aimaku, Jamila Umar Nagudu, Funke Adesiyan, Lekan Oladiipo, Rukky Sandy, Halima Abubakar, Nkiru Sylvanus, Doris Simeon, Toyin Aimaku, Ayo Adesanya, Laide Bakare, Odunlade Adekola and Yomi Fash-Lanso contesting in various other categories.

The winners in each awards category, who will be attending the awards in London, will be announced at a special ceremony on Sunday 9 October in Osogbo, Osun State, southwest Nigeria.

This year award has the theme “Tourism in Africa & the film industry”. Commenting on the theme of the Award this year, Prince Mike Abiola, publisher of African Voice Newspaper UK, said: “Our aim is to create a synergy between filmmakers and government tourism boards; to ensure films are used to promote investment in tourism.“

Abiola added that for all these years, the awards has helped to make Nollywood popular and opened an array of opportunities for past recipients. Apart from movie stars, the awards organizers also recognize entertainment writers. This year, award-winning entertainment editor of P.M.NEWS, Ayodele Lawal has been nominated for the Entertainment Journalist of the Year (Print).

He will slug it out with Amatus Azuh, formerly of Sun Newspapers and now Entertainment Express and Bayo Adeoye of National Life. While for Entertainment Journalist (Broadcast) Tolulope Olusola Lamidi (TV Continental) Jacqueline (AIT) and Michael Nwadibe (Silverbird TV)

There are special awards category including a posthumous honour for the late actor Sam Loco-Efe, Special Contributions to the development of films awarded to Hon. Rotimi Makinde, member, House of Representatives and Special Arts Personality of the Year and Custodian of Culture to HRH, Oba Olasunkami Gbolagade, Olojo of Ojo.
