Man Batters Woman

The police have arraigned an unemployed middle-aged man, Mr. Israel Adekola, 58, before the Abule Egba Magistrate’s Court for beating up a woman, Alhaja Alimatu Olaleye.

The accused, according to the prosecutor, broke the door of Olaleye’s room and attacked her.

He was also said to have assaulted another man, Alphonsus Asogwa and bit him on his left hand.

The prosecuting police officer, Inspector Lugard Ashonle, said the offences were punishable under Sections 249(d), 451, 355 and 351 of the Criminal Code, Cap.17, Vol. 2, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.

The charge reads: “That you, Israel Adekola on 17 April, 2011 at 29, Odekeye Street, New Oko Oba within the Ikeja Magisterial District did conduct yourself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace and cause malicious damage to the room of Alhaja Alimatu.

“You also assaulted Alhaja Alimatu Olaleye and bit Alphonsus Asogwa on his left hand, offences punishable under Sections 249(d), 451, 355 and 351 of the Criminal Code, Cap.17, Vol. 2, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.”

He pleaded not guilty to the charges and the presiding magistrate, Mr. Owolabi Komolafe, granted him bail in the sum of N50,000.

The magistrate also adjourned the case till 25 May, 2011.
