For allegedly obtaining N480,000 from his friend on the pretence that he would supply him 400 cartons of Croaker fish and later failing to do so, one Ezuma Ifeanyi has been arrested and arraigned before a court at Orile Police Division.

The incident was said to have occurred in August 2010 at Alaba Suru, Orile-Iganmu, Lagos State, southwest Nigeria.

The police alleged that the suspect tricked the victim, Amechi Okoye, to part with the money on the agreement that he would supply him the products which he failed to supply and refused to refund the money.

The victim, Amechi, reported the matter to the police and the suspect was arrested.

After interrogation, he was charged before the Surulere Magistrate’s Court on a two-count charge of obtaining money under false pretence, offences punishable under Section 419 and 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 17, vol. ii, laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge and the presiding magistrate, Mr. A. O. Gbajumo, granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties.

The magistrate also directed that the surety must be on Grade Level 08 in the Civil Service with a proof of tax payment to the Lagos State government for two years. He also ordered that their addresses must be verified. He adjourned the matter.

The accused was ordered remanded in prison custody when he could not meet the bail conditions.
