Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has redeemed the promise to the players and officials of Sharks Football Club of Port Harcourt for winning the 2010 West African Football Union Cup (WAFU) competition, by presenting them with car and cash gifts.

At a brief presentation ceremony today at the Sharks FC Stadium in Port Harcourt, the players were rewarded with a brand new Nissan Sunny car and five hundred thousand Naira each, while the officials received a new Nissan Sunny car and One million Naira each, as encouragement to make them win more trophies.

Speaking at the Sharks Stadium, Port Harcourt, venue of the event, Governor Amaechi said, Sharks FC as champions of West African Football, are expected by government and the people of the state to be among the top three league leaders in Nigerian Football.

Governor Amaechi, who was represented by the Commissioner for Sports, Boma Iyaye, commended the players and their handlers for their hard work, commitment and discipline that resulted in the winning of the championship. He explained that the state government would always deliver on its promises, and urged the players not to rest on their oars, if they must get to the zenith of their chosen profession, and pledged the continued support of the state government to the team.

 

The President of Nigerian Football Federation, Alhaji Aminu Maigari, expressed appreciation to the State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi for his love for football in the country. The Commissioner for Sports represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Sports, Sir Walter Ndu, thanked the governor for the support given to the players and their officials that motivated them to work hard to win the competition. Responding on behalf of the players, Captain of Sharks FC of Port Harcourt, Mr Oginga Oginga, expressed appreciation to the state governor for being truly a pillar of support to the team and promised that the club would not let him and the people of the state down in subsequent competitions.

Governor Amaechi promised to reward the Sharks FC of Port Harcourt players, while receiving the WAFU Trophy won by the team at Government House in December, 2010.
