Donatus Chukwuka is the Chief Coach of Sirdona Football Club of Abule-Egba. Chukwuka spoke about the club’s achievements and preparation for Ogun State Challenge Cup with SUNDAY AKINTOYE
Your team crashed out in the group stage of the on going Baale Omole Football Competition, were you disappointed that you didn’t make the final?
Not at all, my team gave their best but we were just unlucky to have played 1-1 with Handsworth United in our last group match. We supposed to win the match, unfortunately, our opponents scored in the last minutes, which was so painful.
Do you think Handsworth FC played better than your team?
Our opponents were just lucky to get the equaliser. Don’t forget that my player scored the own goal that gave them the equaliser in the last minutes of the match. We dominated the game from the blast of the whistle, but we could not convert our chances.
Which competitions are you targeting now after your team have been eliminated from Baale Omole Cup?
We have started preparation for Ogun State Challenge Cup. This is our first time of participating in the competition and we want to use the opportunity of this tourney to expose our players.
Where do you see your team in Ogun FA Cup?
We are not targeting the cup but the aim of taking part in the competition is mainly to expose my players to more difficult competitions like Ogun FA Cup. I wish we can go far in the tournament. I will be happy if we can reach the quarter final
Why do you prefer Ogun State Challenge Cup when your team are based in Lagos?
I am not interested in Lagos FA Cup because the style of officiating in the competition. This kills the glamour of the tourney. A lot of Lagos grassroots clubs prefer to play in Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo and Ekiti States where there will be fair officiating.
Tell us more about Sirdona FC?
Sirdona Football Club was formed in 1989 at Abule-Egba with 12 players, but today we have over 40 players.
How many laurels have the club won since inception?
We have won many laurels. We won Super Cup recently. We defeated Smart Strikers 3-1 to lift the trophy.
