The management of Ladoke Akintola University (LAUTECH) today shut down the institution for a week following a protest staged by students.

In a similarly vein, the President of the Student Union of the institution Mr. Adeniji Idowu alias ‘ID Aluta’ of the Department of Civil Engineering has been suspended forthwith.

According to information gathered the one week close down of the institution and suspension of the SUG President was as a result of a demonstration staged yesterday by the students over the recent hike in school fees.

PM NEWS gathered that the school fees was increased from N60, 000 to about N100, 000 as alleged by the students.

It would be recalled that the institution has been locked in crisis for over a year due to the ownership tussle between Oyo and Osun states over the 20-year-old university. Oyo State planned to solely own the institution against the decision of the Osun state government, leading to recall of Oyo state indigene staff of the institution from Osogbo to Ogbomoso late last year.

In a release made available to PM NEWS, signed by the institution’s Acting Registrar Mr Niyi Fehintola, yesterday, it was said that “the authorities of the LAUTECH have declared a one week mid-semester break with immediate effect.

Similarly, Mr Adeniji Idowu popularly called ID Aluta of Department of Civil Engineering has been suspended indefinitely from the University for the role he played during a recent disturbance of the peace within Ogomoso community”.

The University authorities have therefore called on parents and guardians to call their wards home.

According to the statement, “students are expected back on campus on Monday, March 21, 2011”
