Bus Driver Charged With Murder

A commuter bus driver in charge of a Volkswagen bus with Lagos  registration number XU 269 EPE, Adebayo Adegbite, has been arraigned before a Cele Magistratae’s Court, Isolo, Lagos State for allegedly killing a pedestrian with his vehicle.

Adegbite was alleged to have driven the vehicle on a public highway in a manner dangerous to the public and having no regard for other road users by knocking down and causing the death of Iwekogwu Vincent, 36.

He was arraigned on a two-count charge of dangerous driving and murder, offences contrary to Section 29(1) of the Road Traffic Act and punishable under Section 45, Cap.124, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria.

Count one of the charge reads: “That you, Adebayo Adegbite of 1, Wahab Street, Mafoluku, Lagos on 2 February, 2011 at Iyana Itire Bus Stop, Itire in the Lagos magisterial district, being the driver in charge of one Volkswagen bus with registration number XU 269 EPE drove same in the public highway in a manner which was dangerous to the public without regard to other road users, knocked down and caused the death of one Iwekogwu Vincent, 36 of Plot 2, Bik A, Beachland Estate, Arepo Ogun State, thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 29(1) of the Road Traffic Act and punishable under Section 45, Cap. 124, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge and the presiding magistrate granted him bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The case has been adjourned till 5 April, 2011 for trial.
