An attempt by an accused, Mr. Kazeem Olajide, to escape at the Ejigbo Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria has been foiled by securitymen attached to the court.

The accused claimed after he was arrested that he decided to escape because he has nobody to bail him out if he was remanded in prison.

The 22-year old was arrested and charged to court for allegedly stealing a motorcycle with registration number QV 630 FST belonging to Sarki Ahmed of 12, Fatungase Street, Ikotun, Lagos.

When the charge was read to him, he pleaded not guilty and the presiding magistrate, Mr. S.O. Solebo, granted him bail in the sum of N80,000 with one surety.

When the matter was adjourned for another case to be treated, Kazeem suddenly ran out of the court in an attempt to escape but he was caught by vigilant securitymen within the court premises.

He was arraigned immediately and he pleaded guilty to the one-count charge of attempting to escape, an offence punishable under Section 135 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 17, Vol.2, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.

The court found him guilty as charged and subsequently sentenced him to one-month imprisonment without an option of fine.

The initial  theft charge against him was adjourned and he was asked to be coming to court for trial from prison custody.
