The Permanent Secretary and Clerk of Lagos State House of Assembly, Adewale Taiwo Olatunji, is set for retirement by the middle of this year, Assembly Matters has learnt. Olatunji, who joined the state civil service in 1979 after working in the Sales Department of Nigerian Motors Industries Limited between 1977 and 1979, is said to be affected by age as he would be 60 years old in August this year.

He was born on 29 August, 1951 and attended the University of Ibadan, where he graduated with a B.Sc in Political Science in 1976.

Speaking in an interview granted him by the Lagos Assembly, a public relations journal of the House, the Clerk said he would miss the public service and the House when he retires.

“In a couple of months, I am going to retire statutorily. Somebody must come in the same way somebody was here before me.

“I don’t know who will succeed me, but that person must be somebody that can persevere, have patience because here, at times, you get praises and at other times, insults from the honourable members and your staff too.

“No matter the way you look at it, the House of Assembly is a place you will learn a lot of lesson.

“I will miss the conviviality, but, of course, we all will keep in touch,” he told the journal.

He advised his successor never to be one-sided in issues that have to do with staff of the Assembly, saying “you are in-between your staff and honourable members. You have to ensure that there is no acrimony between the two of them for there are always these tendencies to have one but you are supposed to be on top of it.”

He said he had been able to change staff attitude to work and ensured that they became well mannered unlike before, when he came in as permanent secretary in 2001.

Narrating his experience with the lawmakers, Olatunji, said it has not been easy working with 40 people with different temperament and background.

He, however, did not disclose if he would be going into politics after retirement.
