2 OPC Members Charged With Theft

A  Yaba Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, on Tuesday remanded two members of the Oodua Peoples’ Congress (OPC) in prison custody for allegedly robbing at gun point.

The Magistrate, Mrs. Salamah Matepo, ordered that the accused be remanded in Ikoyi Prisons pending when the court would receive a legal advice from the state director of public prosecutions (DPP).

The accused, Azeez Awoyemi and Ibrahim Olanrewaju, are standing trial before the court on a three-count charge of conspiracy, armed robbery and unlawful possession of guns.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Benson Emuerhi, told the court that the accused and others at large, on Dec. 18, 2010, at 36 Ayantuga St., Mushin, Lagos, conspired and robbed one Mr. Toyin Yewola.

Emuerhi said that the accused while armed with a pistol, rifle, as well as other dangerous weapons, dispossessed Yewola of an unspecified amount of money and a cell phone.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Sections 1 (2) (a) and 3 (1) of the Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 1990.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the court did not take the pleas of the accused.
