A teacher in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, Mrs. Kemi Oremakinde, has asked the Alimosho Grade ‘B’ Customary Court in Alimosho Local Government Area, Lagos to dissolve her marriage to her husband, Mr. Aliu Oremakinde.

The mother of two stated in her petition that the dissolution was necessary because her husband, a conductor, threw her out of her matrimonial home since November 2010.

The petitioner told the court that she was no longer interested in the union because her husband no longer caters for her needs and her children’s. According to her, he goes away from home for weeks and whenever he returns, most times, he would start a fight and batter her severely.

Mrs. Oremakinde complained to the court that her husband no longer pays the school fees of her children, Mariam, 8 and Abeeb, 4 years old.

The petitioner told the court that before she was thrown out of her husband’s house last year November, he told her that he was bringing in another wife, making it his third.

She prayed the court to grant her custody of her children who are presently with their father’s elder sister, who already has six children of her own staying in a one-room apartment.

Furthermore, she informed the court that due to the incomplete payment of her children’s school fees, they have been sent out of the school for some weeks now.

In her remarks, the president of the court, Mrs. Adetunji advised the couple to think about their children’s future before making any silly decision.

She then adjourned the case till 21 March.
