As Christians mark the commencement of the Lenten period with the Ash Wednesday, Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Tuesday urged them to use the period to seek the face of God on behalf of Nigeria and all Nigerians for successful general elections.

In his message to all Christians, the Governor added: “We may have done all that is humanly necessary to carry out this exercise but we need His intervention to achieve true success”.

He also enjoined every true believer to use the period for sober reflection on what nature of leadership is truly needed in the country.

“If we all agree that there is need for a change in our country, it is our obligation to determine what direction such a change should take. We need a sincere leadership and the time tested weapon of democracy, the voters’ card and the ballot box, are in our hands to change the things we do not accept”, he reiterated.

The Governor said the period of Lent, just like the Ramadan for Muslims, is a period of spiritual cleansing and a period for the restoration of values.

“It is a time to seek the face of God and make amends for whatever shortcomings there are in our lives. It is a time for self-denial when we seek to subject the flesh to the will of the spirit”, the Governor added.

Governor Fashola explained that this year’s Lenten period is particularly significant because it is coming at a time when Nigerians urgently need God’s intervention in the quest to conduct free and fair elections that will usher in a new dawn for the country.

“It is a stake in which we all hold a share, to rescue our country from the stranglehold of abject poverty and under-development”.

While wishing the Christians a successful fasting period, the Governor urged them to meditate on these issues of national importance so as to come out of the Lenten period prepared, both physically and spiritually, to effect the required change in the country.

“We must take our destiny in our hands in order not to be left behind by the rest of the world. The time to do it is now”, he emphasised.
