Burglar Jailed With Hard Labour

A 32-year old burglar, Adeleke Adeoye, has been sentenced to one year imprisonment with hard labour for burglary and stealing of valuables worth N1.1 million.

The accused was arrested by the police at Adekunle Police Station for allegedly breaking into the wardrobe belonging to Mrs. Josephine Abogunrin, who resides on 14, Makoko Road, Adekunle, Yaba, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, to steal clothes valued at N800,000; gold chains worth N350,000; Nokia handset valued at N14,000 and cash of N5,000. The total value of the stolen items was put at N1,169,000.

The police alleged that the jobless accused perpetrated the act when he passed the night with the son of the complainant who is his friend in their home.

He was arrested the next day at a beer parlour where he was drinking and buying beer for others with the proceeds from the loot.

He was arraigned before the Yaba Magistrate’s Court on a one-count charge of stealing, an offence punishable under Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Vol. 11, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.

He pleaded guilty to the charge and Magistrate O. S. Afa Bashorun sentenced him to one-year imprisonment with hard labour without an option of fine.
