For allegedly damaging properties worth thousands of Naira during fighting at Alayabiagba Street, Ajegunle Ajeromi/Ifelodun Local Government Area, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria between 1 January and 10 January, 2011, seven miscreants popularly called ‘area boys’ have been arrested by men of the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Panti, Yaba, Lagos.

The suspects, Mumini Afeez, Lukman Ahmed, Ajayi Kazeem, Sulaiman Lawal, Gafaru Bakare, Lateef Taiwo and Ibrahim Akande were apprehended following complaints by a resident of the area, Alhaji Saka Adeniyi, 61 and others whose properties were destroyed by the suspects during the mayhem.

Alhaji Adeniyi told the police that things have been very difficult for him and his family since his welding workshop containing his equipment was destroyed by the miscreants.

According to him, his workshop was burnt around 2 a.m. while he was asleep.

“I was shocked to find my shop in ruins the following day. Somebody called me early in the morning to inform me that my shop and machines had been destroyed overnight. We got there and asked people who were leaving on the street what happened and they told us that some ‘area boys’ fought in the area and destroyed the properties.

”Somebody told us he knew one of them. So, we reported the matter to the police at Ajeromi division and Afeez was arrested. It was Afeez who led us to other suspects,” he told the police.

The police inspector in charge of the matter said all investigations had been concluded on the matter and that the suspects will appear in court very soon.

According to him, the suspects accepted responsibility for the disturbance which they said arose from a misunderstanding between them on New Year’ eve.
