A 24-year old man, Adeyemi Adelaja, shocked residents of Ojoola Street, Ejigbo, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria when he jumped into a deep well to escape police arrest.
Adelaja was alleged to have jumped into a well at his residence, 6, Ojoola Street, Ejigbo when police came to arrest him for an undisclosed crime.
P.M.NEWS gathered that when Adelaja heard the police siren and the vehicle stopped in front of his house, he suspected that the police have come to arrest him, he ran to the well and jumped inside it.
The policemen who came to arrest him turned rescuers as they teamed up with neighbours to rescue him.
After his rescue, he was arrested and taken to the Ejigbo Police Station where he allegedly told the police that he jumped into the well in order to escape arrest.
He was charged before the Ejigbo Magistrate’s Court for attempting to commit suicide in order to escape arrest, an offence contrary to Section 327 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 37, Vol. 2, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2004.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge and the magistrate, Mrs. M. B. Folami granted him bail in the sum of N20,000 with one surety.
The matter has been adjourned till 7 February, 2011.
