Following the red alert raised by the Presidential Implementation Committee on Maritime Safety and Security (PICOMSS) and in the face of series of bomb explosions which rocked some parts of the country in the latter part of last year, security has been beefed up at the nation‘s seaports, especially those in Lagos.
A visit to the Lagos Port Complex Apapa recently revealed that intense security screening now takes place at the entrance to the ports as pedestrians and vehicles alike are subjected to thorough checks before they are allowed into the port premises.
An unusually heavy presence of policemen was also noticed at the entrance of the port while the anti-bomb squad of the Nigeria Police Force was also on hand to screen visitors and vehicles.
The unusually heavy security presence created a traffic jam at the entrance to the port, spilling onto the highway.
