Residents of Magodo Estate in Lagos, South-West Nigeria, have sent a ‘save our soul’ message to Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, over an alleged pollution of the area by block producing industries within the estate.
The residents complained that the industries have for many years posed a constant threat to them “as fumes from their machines fill our apartments, and noise from their engines is a constant source of migraine.â€
The residents, who particularly cited one of the block industries located at 31, Tokunbo Disu Sule Street, also stressed that several attempts by the residents to get the State Environmental Protection Agency to intervene have proven abortive.
“Rather, in what can only be described as an endorsement of illegality, the block industries claim they have been cleared by the agency to operate between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. from Monday to Friday,†they said.
The residents said some officials of the agency were later discovered to always receive bribes from the owners of the industries. They, therefore, appealed to the governor to come to their aid.
