Opposition Set To Checkmate Govt

The National President, National Association of Niger Delta Students (NANDS) Mr. Lucky Emonefe, said on Tuesday that the responsibility of opposition political parties in a democracy was to checkmate the excesses of government.

Emonefe said this when members visited the National Chairman, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu at the National Secretariat of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in Abuja

According to him, the purpose of the visit is to present the award of “Ambassador of Democracy and Good Governance” to the chairman for his outstanding leadership qualities and contributions to democracy in the country.

“The leadership of the Niger Delta students feel satisfied with your commitment to the course of democracy and credible leadership in improving good governance in Nigeria, “ he added.

He said that the association was working toward reducing the problems in Niger Delta by organising seminars and programmes that would help educate the youth on violent and non-violent struggle, gun militancy to pen militancy for the rebirth of the region.

Responding, Onu said that the party was committed to the development of the Niger Delta, adding that the problems in the region could be related to joblessness in the society.

“We believe strongly in making sure that our young people get jobs, we are worried about the rate of joblessness in this country which can be related to criminality,” he said.

He, therefore, urged the youth to stand for non-violence, peace and unity of the country.
