It is no longer news that Globacom Nigeria Limited has opted out of its legal battle to stop the Nigeria Premier League, NPL from naming rival telecommunication giants, MTN as title sponsor for the country’s topflight league.

But P.M.Sports can report that Globacom took a dramatic u-turn on the celebrated case for crucial reasons. A senior staff of the Globacom, Harry Iwuala, says his company withdrawn the case to ensure that peace reigns in Nigerian football arena.

Yesterday, Globacom’s counsel filed a motion for discontinuance of the case at the Federal High Court in Lagos before the presiding judge, Justice Mohammed Liman.

The notice of discontinuance by Globacom was brought in pursuant to Order 50 Rule 2(1) of the Federal High Court Civil Procedure Rules of 2009.

The suit was filed by Globacom challenging the award of the Premier League title sponsorship to MTN claiming that due process was not followed in the exercise.

While speaking on Ray Power FM early today, Iwuala said  management of Globacom considered the general interest of Nigerian football and its love for the game to stop the civil suit, adding that the company wants to see a peaceful atmosphere in Nigerian football, which has been bedeviled by crises in the past few months.

The withdrawal of the case was also due to the hardship the suit has caused some postponements in the NPL. ague.
