Nigeria Premier League (NPL) leaders, Dolphin, have identified unity as the key reason for their steady progress in the 2010/2011 season.

Dolphin sit proudly at the summit of the NPL standings with 24 points from 11 matches. With just three losses recorded in the same number of games, the Port Harcourt-based side has since installed themselves as one of the frontrunners for the title.

SuperSport.com visited the camp of the leaders and spoke to the key actors in the script.

Stanley Eguma said he was never tempted to take unilateral decisions despite been the head of the technical crew. “We are always united. We always consult ourselves before we reach any decision. Even though I am the manager, I never take any unilateral decisions.

“The players have also made our job easier. They are always early to training and listen to instructions. We have started well but the league is a marathon not a sprint so we will continue to work hard till we get to the end,” he said.

On his part, chief coach of the team, Zachary Baraje, said he had no doubts about joining the team as soon as he got the call shortly before the start of the current campaign.

“The moment Stanley Eguma asked me to come over, I knew I had to move. Eguma is a great coach that is worth his onions. The quality of the players at the disposal of the coaches was another factor that helped sway my mind and 11 matches into the season, am sure I made the right choice,” Baraje said.

Dolphin has the meanest defence in the country as they have let in a miserly four goals in 11 outings.

Understandably the spot light falls on the team’s defenders and goalkeepers, and goalkeeper trainer, George “Bahado” Onyenekwe, revealed that quality personnel has made his job tantamount to a stroll in the park.

“Working with keepers like Sunday Rotimi, Afessoh Attah and Udoo Ochiogu has been a good experience.

They are the best three (goal keepers) in the league and the fact that we have only conceded only four goals shows how solid we are in that area.We will try to repeat the successes we had in 2004 and 2005,”  he said.
