As at Friday morning, results made available to newsmen in Kano indicated that Mohammed Abacha, son of former military Head of State, General Sani Abacha was leading with 144, 066 votes on top of four other contestants.

Former Military Administrator of Kaduna state and ADC to General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) when he was Military Head of State, Brigadier-General Lawal Jafaru Isah (rtd) followed Abacha with 78,671 votes.

The immediate past national chairman of the party, Senator Rufai Sani Hanga polled 45,618, followed by former Deputy Governor of Kano state during Ibrahim Shekarau’s first-term, Engr. Magaji Abdullahi who got 5, 795 votes, while Alhaji Auwalu Anwar, an educationist, came last with 3,410 votes.

The chairman of the party in the state, Alhaji Dan Azumi Gwarzo had confirmed to journalists early yesterday morning of Abacha’s victory, but newsmen were stunned on Friday evening when it was learnt that the ballot boxes of 23 Local Governments were taken to Abuja to take a final decision on the results, due to alleged irregularities.

It was learnt, however, that there is a high-wire politicking going on at the party’s national secretariat today where the Board of Trustees, BOT, members are sitting to determine who would be given the party’s flag.

“I must tell you that the constitution of CPC gives enormous powers to the BOT. Even in areas where elections are held and there is a problem, the BOT has the final say. What I can confirm to you now is that it is going to be between Mohammed Abacha and Lawal Jafaru Isa. By the end of the, you will hear who amongst them carried the flag,” a top-notch of the party who does not want his name in print to P.M.NEWS.

The two top contenders (Abacha and Isah) relocated to Abuja yesterday evening where they are exploiting all their contacts with the BOT to outwit each other.
