The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Thursday said that 7,600 Direct Data Capture (DDC) machines had been assigned to Lagos State for the  voters’ registration exercise.

The state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Adekunle Ogunmola, who disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, added that more machines  were still being expected. “We have received 7,600 DDC machines in Lagos and we are expecting the rest very soon,” he said.

Ogunmola added that with the number of machines so far received in the state, the commission would ensure a credible voters’ registration exercise.

He advised eligible voters to ensure they go to the registration centres with their birth certificate for confirmation of age.

“We know electoral malpractice starts from the point of registration, so, the commission will prosecute anyone caught involved in multiple registration.

“Any one who registers twice will be arrested and imprisoned for one year or pay a fine of N100, 000,” he added.

The REC explained that only 245 public schools in the state would be used for the exercise, but disclosed that those for the exercise would have posters  pasted at their entrances designating them as such.

“We’ve pasted posters in all the local government areas but since Lagos is predominantly a Yoruba speaking area, the posters are printed in Yoruba language,”  he said. Ogunmola clarified that people would only be able to vote where they registered.

NAN reports that the registration exercise will commence on Jan. 15 to 29.
