Audi’s bold ambition to cover almost every segment of the market seems to know no limits. According to Autocar, Audi is strongly considering the creation of an A9 Sportback. Naturally slotting above the recently unveiled A7, the A9 ‘four-door-coupe’ will be based on the Audi A8’s architecture and would give Audi some headway into the premium market occupied by the likes of Porsche’s Panamera and Maserati’s Quattroporte.

Although the official green light has not been given for the A9’s creation, Audi is currently working up the business case and exploring the engineering possibilities. In fact, both aforementioned factors could add up make a case for sister-brand Lamborghini’s on-again-off-again Estoque saloon to finally realise production and piggy-back off the project.

Being based on the A8, the A9 would naturally benefit from an aluminium space frame, an air-sprung chassis and a wide range of V6 and V8 petrol and diesel engines. There are also rumours pointing toward a 6.3-lire W12 petrol unit for a potent flagship, although a Lamborghini V10 would certainly not be out of the question.
