NAFDAC Tackles Businessman; Over Adulterated La Casera

National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has filed a three-count criminal charge of selling adulterated La Casera, a soft drink, against Lagos businessman, Ugochukwu Ezenwata.

In the criminal charge filed before Justice Binta Murtala Nyako at the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court by NAFDAC’s prosecuting counsel, Mr. Okon E Offiong, it was alleged that sometime in June last year, Ugochukwu Ezenwata of 19, Atoke Gbadebo Street, Bucknor, Ejigbo, Lagos was arrested with some quantity of unregistered adulterated La Casera soft drink..

The prosecutor further alleged that the accused businessman sold some quantity of the adulterated La Casera drink to some traders, among them Mrs. Basilia Iheanachor of 16/18, Egbe Road, Oke Afa, Lagos, who reported the matter to the police.

The offence allegedly committed by the accused businessman is contrary to sections (1) and (2) of the Foods Drugs and related products registration Act Cap of 33 laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

Ugochukwu Ezenwata was also accused of falsely packaging La Casera to mislead the buyer regarding the quality of the drink, thereby committing an offence contrary to Sections 2 of the packaged food labeling of NAFDAC.

The accused, who had made useful statement to law enforcement agents, will be arraigned in court soon.
