But, Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets failed to make the African Junior Championship which is a qualifying tournament for the African teams to the FIFA U-17 World Cup scheduled for 18 June-10 July in Mexico.
Eight teams were divided into two groups of four teams each to battle for honours at the ninth edition of the biennial championships.
Hosts Rwanda are in Group A alongside Burkina Faso, Senegal and Egypt, while reigning champions, Gambia, Congo, Cote d’Ivoire and Mali are in Group B.
The four teams in each group will engage each other on a round-robin basis with the group winners and runners-up advancing to the semi finals with the eventual winners progressing to the final. The tourney will be played at the Amahoro National Stadium, Umuganda Stadium and Stade de Kigali.
Rwanda’s Amavubi (The Wasps) will open the tournament at the Amahoro National Stadium against Burkina Faso, hoping an inexperienced team will find courage and fortitude from the support of the home crowd. The defending champions Gambia will open against upstarts Congo at the Umuganda Stadium in Gisenyi on Sunday.
