LASU Lecturers Suspend 3-Month Old Strike

Lecturers at the Lagos State University (LASU) said on Tuesday that they had suspended their three- month-old strike.

Dr. Kabir Akinyemi, Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), LASU chapter, announced this at a special congress held in the Ojo campus of the  institution.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the lecturers had embarked on an indefinite strike on Sept. 23, 2010 to protest against the state governmentâ€s  non-implementation of the 2009 Federal Government-ASUU agreement on salary raise and other issues.

On Dec. 26, 2010, the students†union had fixed their resumption date for Jan. 5 following the failure of both the lecturers and the state government to  resolve their differences.

Akinyemi said the lecturers decided to suspend the strike after the state government had acceded to their nine-point demand at a meeting held with the union  on Dec. 31, 2010.

“We are going back to the lecture rooms based on the resolutions reached with the state government in December 2010.

“We have their promise to implement the agreement and we hope they will implement it to the letter,” he said.
