Yakubu Aiyegbeni has bemoaned his frustration at sitting on the Everton bench.

Manager David Moyes made clear his lack of trust in his strikers by playing Yakubu, Louis Saha and Jermaine Beckford as subs at West Ham last weekend.

And the Scot insisted he had his “better players on the pitch” after the 1-1 draw.

The Super Eagles star became the first Toffees player since Peter Beardsley in 1992 to score more than 20 goals in a season followng his club record £11.25m  signing from Middlesbrough in 2007. But the injury-dogged 28-year-old has only started once this season – and has not only started six Premier League matches  this season.

The goal Yakubu missed in the 2010 World Cup during Nigeria’s match against South Korea was still haunting the player till now.

Yakubu said: “It’s frustrating as a striker when you don’t play. I want to play. When you don’t have chances to play it’s really hard for you as a striker.  It’s really frustrating sitting on the bench.

“But the team are playing really well. You have to wait and take your chance. At the moment everything is good.”

Moyes has called on his striker’s to “step up” to replace the Australian with no money to spend in the transfer window.

Yakubu, who last started in the 4-1 home defeat to West Brom last month, added: “Hopefully I will get my chance, but what can you do? Just keep working hard  in training and hopefully I will get my chances.

“For me I just concentrate on my work as a striker. I live on my work. There is pressure when you play so well and don’t score goals.

“It’s goals that matter. We are the strikers and we are really, really struggling to score goals at the moment.

“The team are doing a good job and hopefully I will get some chances and get some goals before the end of the season.”
