Two unidentified passengers drowned in the Lagos lagoon this morning as the commuter bus with registration number XW 124 LSR summersaulted several times on the Third Mainland bridge in Lagos, South-West, Nigeria.
An eyewitness account said the 14-seater Obalende-bound bus was coming from Ketu. Its tyre exploded near the University of Lagos axis of the bridge and it summersaulted several times. Two passengers reportedly fell off the bus and plunged into the lagoon, while others who are injured were taking to hospital.
As at press time, the corpse of a man in his 40s had been recovered by local divers while the search for the second body was ongoing. The bus was towed to the Olowu, Lagos Island office of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA.
A combined team of policemen and LASTMA officials were at the scene of the accident to ensure free flow of traffic after clearing the initial gridlock caused by the accident.
