Toyibat Comprehensive School, Gbagada, Lagos and Addax Rugby Football Club junior team at the weekend emerged winners of the Friends of Rugby’s organised Mike Ukome under-aged Schools competition held at St Saviour’s School Ikoyi, Lagos State.
According Ntiense O Williams, Secretary of Friends of Rugby, the group successfully revived schools rugby competition with the organisation of the one-day championship held on Saturday, 27 November, this year.
Playing withvigour, Toyibat lads kept no one in doubt about their ability to outdo other schools when they defeated the host, St. Saviour’s kids by 15 points to 5 points in the final of the Under-11 category.
However, despite losing the trophy to the more determined Toyibat side, the St Saviour’s were consoled with the Most Valuable Player, MVP, award which went to Paul Coker.
Toyibat also went home with the Under-16 boy’s trophy, beating Kings Collage 5 points to nil in a hard fought battle that stretched into extra time.
With the match gradually drawing to a close without any score, Toyibat had to rely on the experience of their team captain, Wale Akanbi, whose solo run made nonsense of the defense line of Kings Collage boys to give his team a well deserved 5 points victory scored in the first half of the extra time.
Wale Akanbi’s effort was good enough to give his side the deserved victory and earn him the MVP, award for the U-16 boy’s event.
Meanwhile, Addax Rugby Football Club junior team were able to checkmate Toyibat’s tall ambition to cart away all the trophies at stake, as they defeated them by 5 points to nil to win the Under-14 boys category of the tournament.
Anu Owoeye of Addax emerged the MVP, of the Under-14 cadre. Addax were also victorious again as they won the Girl’s category defeating Toyibat Girl’s by 5 points to nil to prove their prowess in the Girl’s school rugby tournament.
Ifeoma Oguike of Addax won the Most Valuable player, MVP award in the Girl’s event that ended proceedings in the highly successful tournament.
Four schools and one club participated in the tournament, which has been on since 2005, though the tournament did not hold in the last two years. They are Toyibat Comprehensive School, Dowen Collage, Kings Collage, St Saviour School Ikoyi, Lagos and Addax Junior.
The coordinator of the tournament, Emeka Ukome, commended “Friends of Rugbyâ€for good organisation and proper planning, singling out their Chairman, Kelechi Mbagwu, for the sponsorship of the event after two years break which was due to lack of sponsorship.
