Three men who specialise in street gambling in Lagos have been arrested by the police.
The suspects, Emeka Johnson, 35, Musiliu Adegbite, 32 and a 25-year old Monsuru Olamomi were arrested at Wuraola Street, Itire, Ikate, Lagos State.
The arrest was made possible by a tip off from the residents of the area to the police, who had complained bitterly over the activity of the gamblers in the area.
P.M.NEWS gathered that the suspects instead of looking for jobs engaged in all sorts of gambling in the area, thereby influencing the young ones in the area negatively.
Their attitude had become source of concern to the residents, who went to Itire Police Station to report the case.
The police in response laid an ambush for the suspects and three of them were arrested while others escaped.
The defendants have been charged to Isolo Magistrate’s Court for unlawfully gambling. The offence, the police said was contrary to Section 236 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 17 Vol. 2, laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2004.
The suspects pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Therefore, the Magistrate Judge, Mrs. F. O. Agbokhanbo, granted them bail with them sum of N20,000 with one responsible surety.
The matter has been adjourned till 9 December, 2010.
