The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), has been urged to urgently rehabilitate the Ijora Causeway Road in Lagos State, South West Nigeria, which has been in deplorable state for long, thereby becoming an eyesore to the country.
Dr. Samuel Adesola Adedayo, Chairman, Apapa/Iganmu Local Council Development Area of the state, made the appeal recently, during an inspection of palliative measure provided by the Works Department of the council on the deplorable part of the road.
According to the chairman, “Moshood Abiola Way, popularly called Ijora Causeway, belongs to the Federal Government and its maintenance should naturally be under Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA).
“The road has been long neglected and we have written letters and personally visited FERMA’s office on two occasions, but nothing has been done.
“Unfortunately, motorists do not know who owns the road, their belief is that it belongs to the local government and thus have been calling on us to do the repair.
“Since the inception of this administration, we have been making a lot of efforts to make sure that the road is motorable, while we have been maintaining it regularly.
“We want to appeal to FERMA to come to our rescue and live up to its responsibility and maintain the road that has been neglected for too long. If we have not been maintaining it, there would not have been any access for anyone to get to his or her destination.
“Ijora is part of Nigeria, its citizens should not be made to suffer unjustly and the deplorable state of road is having an adverse effect on the people.
“I hereby challenge FERMA to live up to its responsibility and do something about the road,†Adedayo pleaded.
