With new compact sedans like the Chevrolet Cruze and Hyundai Elantra challenging the Corolla, Toyota is fighting back with a refreshed 2011 model, due to debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
Refining the formula for 2011 starts with a few exterior modifications. The new front grille is easy to spot. The taillights have a new design, as well, and the side view mirrors are larger. As on any properly refreshed model, the wheel covers and alloy wheels have been redesigned. Toyota notes that the Corolla’s design was created with input from design studios in Turin, Italy, but P.M.News Motoring think it’s safe to say the Corolla still isn’t the segment’s style leader.
The 1.8-litre engine is paired with a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic Electronically Controlled Transmission (ECT) on the base Toyota Corolla, while the LE model features the four-speed automatic standard. The four-speed automatic uses a torque converter with flex lockup for increased fuel efficiency, as well as uphill/downhill shift control. For a more engaging driving experience, the driver can shift the four-speed automatic manually by moving the shift lever to the left from its “D†position into the “S†position, then pushing forward for upshifts and back for downshifts. An indicator inside the combination gauge shows the gear selected. The 1.8-litre engine on the Corolla S transmits power through the five-speed manual transmission or the four-speed automatic.
Inside, Toyota has paid attention to details most consumers might actually notice. That includes a new seat colour and pattern, as well as a new colour on the door trim. The steering wheel is new. When the 2011 sedan goes on sale in December, it will offer two new colours according to manufacturers.
Toyota says the 2011 Corolla will come with two years or 25,000 miles of complimentary maintenance, like all new Toyotas. Will this be enough to fight off new compact sedan competitors? Wait just a few months and we’ll have the answer.
