Task Force Set To Curb Truancy

As from Monday next week, pupils and students found roaming the streets during school hours will be arrested and taken to the nearest police station for interrogation.

The Education Secretary of Lagos Mainland Local Government Education Authority, Mr. Adetona Bisi Lawrence, gave the warning at the inauguration of a Special Education Task Force Team in Ebute Metta.

He said the team was inaugurated to work in line with child rights law of Lagos State which came into effect on 28 May, 2007 as a major step by the state government through the state House of Assembly to protect and guarantee the future of the children.

Lawrence stated that the Task Force would check students’ punctuality in schools, pick up students who may leave home and never gets to school, put an end to truancy, enhance the right of every child to education and to encourage team spirit and hard work and recognise excellence in teachers, students and pupils among others.

He also presented a mini bus that was bought by the authority for the members of the Task Force to ease their operation.

The Education Secretary equally expressed gratitude to the chairman of Lagos Mainland Local Government, Mr. Oladele Adekanye and Chairman of Yaba Local Council Development Area, Alhaji Jide Jimoh, for their support in the last one year since he assumed office as the Secretary.

Also speaking at the event, the Tutor-General of the District Four of the state Ministry of Education, Otunba Ayobade Obajimi, commended the steps by the authority and enjoined other local government Education Authorities in the state to emulate the programme.

He stated that the inauguration of the Task Force was in line with the state government’s policy to ensure discipline among students.

Otunba Obajimi promised that the Ministry of Education would assist the authority to ensure success of the programme.
