The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged the Lagos State Government to act fast and end the strike by lecturers in tertiary institutions in the state or face the consequences.

In a statement signed by the Zone D Coordinator of NANS, Mr. Eniola Opeyemi, the students’ body accused the state government of trading away the future of students in the state by paying no attention to the lecturers’ demand.

According to Mr. Opeyemi, NANS will not hesitate to shift its secretariat to the seat of government in Alausa, if the government fails to end the strike with immediate effect.

“The Lagos State government is becoming insensitive to the plight of the students and hospital patients by ignoring the lecturers and the medical doctors.

“Due to the strike by medical practitioners, masses are exposed to danger and many of them have died,” he stated.

Mr. Opeyemi declared that NANS would soon call for the declaration of a state of emergency in the education sector and a total reorganisation of the state Ministry of Education.

NANS also decried the academic situation in Oyo and Osun states, saying: “Standard of Education has fallen. Academic activities have been paralysed in LAUTECH due to conflicts arising from payment of salaries of staff of the institution between the executive governors of Oyo and Osun states, Chief Christopher Alao Akala and Chief Olagunsoye Oyinlola, respectively.

The union urged the government to prevail on the two governors to find lasting solution to the problems in the institutions.

The NANS Zone D coordinator assured that the national body will soon carry out its threat to organise the one-million man march to the National Assembly to protest poor funding of education in the country.
