As intending Christian pilgrims from Lagos State prepare to embark on this year’s pilgrimage to Jerusalem, the State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola has called for prayers for the restoration of values in the Nigerian society.

Governor Fashola, who spoke at the Chapel of Christ the Light, Alausa, venue of a Dedication Service for the intending pilgrims yesterday, said the prayers have become expedient in order that those values which, according to him, “are very critical to our humanity” would be re-established in the country.

Such values, the Governor said, include “those that remind us that we are only humans and life is all vanity; that anything that we own here we will leave behind and that we must love our neighbours as ourselves as commanded by God Himself”.

Continuing, he told the intending pilgrims, “I urge you to pray for our country, to pray for our people, to pray for our leaders, but most especially, to pray for us all that God would restore those values with which He created us in His image and likeness”.

“Pray for us that God may restore the values that will make us rethink when we want to withhold jobs because we are angry; values that will remind us of our common humanity; the values that will make us decide that we can only go as far and no more”, Governor Fashola said.

Apparently alluding to the need to negotiate rather than down tools, Governor Fashola asked, “Who of us has not offended God? But has God got so angry that he decides to withhold oxygen even for one minute? Besides, God created us in his own image and likeness so why do we hurt ourselves?”

Noting that all that mankind needs – prosperity, education, jobs and others – all go back to values, Governor Fashola urged, “Let us all go back to those values with which God created us. As you perform your religious obligations in the Holy Land, I ask you to pray to God to restore to us the values that will make us be as He created us”.

The Governor prayed that God would guide and protect the pilgrims as they travel, while they are in the Holy Land and on theirre return to Nigeria while also protecting their families while they are away.
