The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday approved six new federal universities to address admission problems faced by qualified candidates in the country.
The Minister of State for Education, Mr. Kenneth Gbagi, announced this to State House correspondents shortly after the FEC meeting, presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan.
Gbagi said one university would be located in each of the country’s six geo-political zones.
He also said the council approved N5.9 billion to procure instructional materials for primary schools across the country.
Also speaking, the Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili, said the council approved N1.3 billion for the procurement of five different anti-retroviral drugs.
She said the approval was to sustain the implementation of the government’s policy on free treatment of people living with HIV and AIDs.
She said the Federal Ministry of Health had so far treated 600,000 persons living with the virus in its 262 treatment centres nationwide.
