The Chairman of Resident Doctors at the Enugu State University of Science and  Technology Teaching Hospital, Enugu, Dr. Okechukwu Ogbodo, said that doctors at the  hospital did not observe the NLC strike.

Ogbodo told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Wednesday that doctors were  not part of the ongoing NLC strike because they were on essential service.

“They are handling emergency cases at the hospital,’’ he said.

The Director of Administration of the hospital, Mr. Raphael Ohanta, said that the  hospital was on a partial strike.

Ohanta said that the hospital as health institution was involved in saving lives.

“The strike is not total here as of now. We cannot just discharge our out-patients  and the already admitted ones,” he said.

A doctor at the hospital, who pleaded anonymity, who claimed to support the strike,  suggested that the hospital should proceed on a total strike until government did  what was right.

The source said the amount that the NLC was asking for was too small for the  government to pay off.

“Letting labour to embark on this strike is a very big mistake by the government.  How will someone work effectively in an empty stomach,” he queried.

NAN reports that both academic and non academic staff of the hospital were at duty  posts with some doctors at the theatre apparently saving lives.

The Public Relations Officer of the hospital, Mr. John Nwatu, who spoke to NAN from  his home, claimed that the NMA and Nursing and Midwifery Association of Nigeria as  affiliates of NLC should be on strike.
