The Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, Mr. Teiisan Omatseye, has explained why Nigeria should maintain her seat in the International Maritime Organisation, IMO.
Omatseye reiterated the committment of NIMASA to the enthronement of global best practices in the provision of maritime services in Nigeria.
According to Omatseye, the agency has focused its attention and deployed its human and capital resources to areas such as effective maritime safety administration, maritime labour regulation, marine pollution prevention and control, search and rescue, wreck removal, cabotage enforcement, shipping development.
He said the Nigerian government also supports the protection of the marine environment as it has ratified the Marine Pollution (MARPOL) Convention and other relevant conventions.
The country has instituted measures to prevent, mitigate and eliminate danger to her coastline as a result of maritime casualty and NIMASA has a full-fledged Marine Environment Management Department with a Director as its head.
NIMASA has often displayed its commitment to the enthronement of global best practices in the provision of Maritime Services in Nigeria. “The agency has focused its attention, and deployed its human and capital resources, to areas such as effective maritime safety administration, maritime labour regulation, marine pollution prevention and control, search and rescue, wreck removal, cabotage enforcement, shipping development and ship registration, training and certification of seafarers and maritime capacity development,” Omatseye stated.
“Nigeria’s Maritime Safety services are tailored towards the delivery of practical services through activities that will enhance the safety of vessels and crew,’ he added.
