The Lagos State government has accused some traditional rulers in Lagos, southwest  Nigeria, of conniving with unscrupulous land speculators to sell government land to  the public.

The fraudulent traditional rulers and land speculators engaged in this unwholesome  practice have been warned to desist from the act or the wrath of the law would  descend on them.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Lands Bureau, Mr. Gbenga Ashafa who gave the  warning said it had been discovered that dubious land speculators, with the active  support of some traditional rulers, were  selling government acquired land to  unsuspecting members of the public.

According to him, the state government had recently noticed the criminal activities  of these dubious people in Ikeja Central Business District, CBD/Omole under the  bridge; Omole II/Otedola Housing Estate; Magodo ‘B’ series along canal route; Olowo  Ira Valley adjacent to the canal, among others.

He, however, warned members of the public to be wary of these unscrupulous land  speculators who go about with fake land titles falsely claiming that the  acquired government land belongs to them or their family, thereby defrauding  unsuspecting members of the public.

Ashafa advised that any person intending to acquire interest in the land in the  areas referred to or indeed in any land in Lagos State should ascertain the status  of such land from the State Surveyor General’s Office, the Land Registry, or the  Land Use and Allocation Committee at Alausa, Secretariat, Ikeja, before purchasing  such land.   He also enjoined the public not to patronise criminal land speculators  and their collaborating traditional rulers.
